Making a Motorized Toy Car

This is a project that was done at a 2 hour session as part of a Young Makers Club events organized by Boston Makers in the spring of 2015. The car was assembled by a group of young students, ranging in ages from 10 – 14 years old, is rated as medium difficulty project for this age group, and required supervision. The main body of the car is made from 3 pieces of cardboard. A 1.5 VDC motor is used to turn the main axle. The DC motor is powered by a single AA battery. A rubber-band is used to transfer the energy of the DC motor to the main axle. The wheels, motor holder, and rubber-band guides were 3D printed. The wheels are pressed-fit onto two steel axles. Two plastic drinking straws are used to hold the wheels in place away from the cardboard body. A switch is used to turn the motor off and on. A hot glue gun was used to attach all the parts together. All the 3D printed parts were printed before hand. The younger students had problems with the soldering of the wires, and was usually performed by the adult supervisors.
